The significance of COP29 was discussed in the Italian Senate

 

The preparations and importance of the 29th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), to be held in Baku this November, were discussed in the Italian Senate.

The "COP29 – Joint Action Against Climate Challenges" conference was organized on the initiative of Senator Marco Scurria, President of the Italy-Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Friendship Group, and was hosted by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Italy.

Senator Marco Scurria, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Italy Rashad Aslanov, Chair of the European Union Policies Committee of the Italian Senate Senator Giulio Maria Terzi di Sant'Agata, Director General for European and International Affairs and Sustainable Finance at the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security Alessandro Guerri, COP29 Lead Negotiator on Adaptation and Loss and Damage Elvin Ashrafzade, and Italy's Special Envoy on Climate Change Professor Francesco Corvaro participated in the conference.

At the conference, which was convened by journalist Marita Langella, visitors highlighted the importance of COP29 and the dignity and significance of Azerbaijan's first hosting in the Caucasus of such a high-level event.

Senator Marco Scurria pointed out that Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29 would help strengthen bilateral relations with Italy and present new opportunities to discover more about the country.

Ambassador Rashad Aslanov referred to Azerbaijan's activity in the fight against climate change and said that Azerbaijan has great potential for renewable resources, primarily wind and solar energy.

Senator Giulio Maria Terzi di Sant'Agata emphasized certain political and economic advantages of Italian-Azerbaijani cooperation and drew the timeliness of cooperation under the conditions of COP29.

Elvin Ashrafzade emphasized the need for a joint action towards climate challenges and pointed out the special mission of COP29 in reaching the 1.5°C target. The 1.5°C target is intended to cap global warming. Besides, Elvin Ashrafzade emphasized the mission of COP29 in reaching Paris Agreement goals.

Alessandro Guerri offered information about Italy's understanding of climate and greatly valued Azerbaijan's strategy towards COP29 and emphasized its role in the framework of Italy-Azerbaijan relations.

Professor Francesco Corvaro spoke about the climate change provisions, opportunity and challenge the COP29 holds, and thanked Azerbaijan for choosing Italy as one of the rare countries supportive of the negotiations, stating that taking such a step was greatly valued by his country.
