Conference dedicated to the mine problem facing Azerbaijan was held in the Italian Senate

On April 14, 2026, a conference entitled “Mine Clearance: Preventing the Danger, Rebuilding the Future. Azerbaijan's vision" was organized in the Italian Senate at the initiative of Senator Marco Scurria, Head of the Italy-Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Friendship Group, with the organization of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Italian Republic and the participation of the Mine Clearance Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The conference, moderated by journalist Annamaria Esposito, deputy editor-in-chief for foreign news of RaiNews, the first and most popular news television channel in Italy, was attended by the head of the Italy-Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Senator Marco Scurria, secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (COPASIR), MP Ettore Rosato, head of the International Interventions in Humanitarian Emergencies Department of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Gianluca Brusco, deputy chairman of the ANAMA Board of Directors, Samir Poladov, director of the Italian Campaign Against Landmines, the largest non-governmental organization against landmines in Italy, Giuseppe Schiavello, creative director of ArtCloud Network International Fabrizio Conti and Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Italian Republic Rashad Aslanov, who spoke about the landmine problem in Azerbaijan, one of the countries most affected by landmines in the world, the work done, and the challenges ahead.

Senator Marco Scurria highlighted the mine problem in Azerbaijan, the existing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Italy in the field of mine clearance and the active role of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Rome in this activity, and noted the importance of establishing peace at the end of conflicts, but the delay in the return of people to their homes due to mines.

COPASIR Secretary, MP Ettore Rosato, in his speech, appreciated the rapid reconstruction processes in Garabagh, as well as the widespread application of modernity and innovation in the field of construction. He noted the importance of operations carried out in mine-contaminated areas.

Ambassador Gianluca Brusco conveyed the greetings of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy and Head of the Italian National Committee for Humanitarian Action Against Anti-Personnel Mines Edmondo Cirielli, emphasizing the importance of the event that draws attention to such an important issue, and also spoke about the prospects for cooperation between the Italian Ministry and ANAMA.

Samir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the ANAMA Board of Directors, noted that more than 1 million mines have been buried in Azerbaijan, covering 11,667 km2 of the country's territory. He emphasized that 422 Azerbaijanis have been mine victims since 2020, and that today, ANAMA employee is the 73rd person to lose his life as a result of a mine explosion while performing his duties.

Noting that mines are the main obstacles in reconstruction and rehabilitation work, including social and economic reintegration, the return of internally displaced persons, and the strengthening of peace and cooperation in the region, S. Poladov spoke about the mine clearance methods applied in our country.

Giuseppe Schiavello, Director of the Italian Campaign Against Mines, presented the mine experience of Italy and spoke about the close cooperation between the relevant agencies of the two countries.

Fabrizio Conti, Creative Director of ArtCloud Network International, which has been actively involved in the reconstruction, architectural and cultural heritage protection in Garabagh for many years, shared the experience of his numerous visits to the liberated areas.

Two videos were shown about female deminers and the situation in the area.

In his closing speech at the conference, the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Italian Republic, Rashad Aslanov, thanked the organizers, speakers and participants of the event and emphasized that the presence of mines slows down people's return home. The Ambassador spoke about the efforts of the Azerbaijani state in this direction and expressed his confidence that international cooperation, especially with Italy, in this area will be successful.
