Press release 20 January 2026

Victims of January 20 tragedy were commemorated in Rome

A memorial event was held at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Italy on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

At the beginning of the event, a minute of silence was observed in memory of our martyrs who gave their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of our country.

Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Italian Republic Rashad Aslanov emphasized that the January 20 tragedy is of great historical and spiritual importance for the Azerbaijani people. He said that the January events of 1990, being a turning point on the path of our country's independence, have become a symbol of the struggle for freedom and sovereignty.

The diplomat noted that on January 20, 1990, the Soviet Empire committed a grave crime against the civilian population who protested against the violation of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and took to the streets with the ideals of freedom and independence. As a result of the deployment of Soviet troops to the city of Baku and other regions of the Republic, innocent people were killed.

R. Aslanov recalled that on January 21, Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, together with his family members, came to the Permanent Representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow to demonstrate solidarity with the people and gave an open political assessment of the January 20 tragedy. Later, on his initiative, the first official document giving a political and legal assessment of this tragedy was adopted in the Milli Majlis.

The Ambassador drew attention to the fact that the historic Victory gained in the 44-day Patriotic War under the leadership of the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, as well as the full restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity as a result of the anti-terrorist measures carried out in September 2023, further increase the significance of the date of January 20. He said that the souls of all the martyrs who gave their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of our Motherland have found peace today.
