The victims of the Khojaly genocide were commemorated in the Italian Parliament
On February 23, 2026, a conference entitled “Khojaly 34 years later: Remembrance and justice on the path of reconciliation” was held in the Italian Senate on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide. The conference, organized at the initiative of Rafaelle De Rosa, member of the Foreign Affairs and European Union Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Italy, was attended by the Chairman of the Italy-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Union Friendship Group, Senator Marco Scurria, Vice President of the Italy-Asia Institute, former Senator Sergio Divina, and Professor Antonello Fulco Biagini.
The first speaker, Senator Marco Scurria, stated that it was impossible to forget what had happened, but it was important to have the courage to think about the horizons of peace and brotherhood. He said that after achieving peace in the region, the task of building a better future had arisen.
Vice President of the Italian-Asian Institute Sergio Divina noted that despite Azerbaijan's military capabilities, it does not want to wage war, but rather wants to resolve this conflict diplomatically, referring to the known UN resolutions in this regard and that the UN has always recognized Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.
In his speech, Professor of Eastern European History Antonello Fulco Biagini, who was the first vice-rector of Sapienza University in 2013-2016, emphasized that over the years Azerbaijan has preferred dialogue over hatred.
Ambassador Rashad Aslanov stated that the genocide in Khojaly will be remembered forever in the history of our country, that 613 civilians were killed precisely because they were Azerbaijanis, and that Azerbaijan has liberated Khojaly from occupation today, reconstruction work is underway there, and many people have already returned to their homes.
R. Aslanov noted that today we live in a peaceful environment, that in order to achieve lasting peace, it is necessary to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice, that some of those who committed grave crimes against the Azerbaijani people are now answering before a court of justice, and that our country always wants justice, not revenge.
Speaking about the “Justice for Khojaly!” campaign launched by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the diplomat noted that the whole world should make joint efforts to condemn these crimes so that such events do not happen again.
At the end of the event, a video clip was shown, prepared by the “Artcloud Network International” company, depicting the bitter consequences of the Khojaly genocide and the current return of life there.
