The 177th Session of the FAO Council held in Rome

From 7 to 11 April 2025, the 177th Session of the FAO Council was held at the Headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Azerbaijan was represented at the event by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Italy.

The Independent Chairperson of the FAO Council, Dr. Hans Hoogeveen, delivered the opening remarks at the session, noting that there is a greater need today for the United Nations, particularly for FAO, and that if the UN focuses more on addressing global challenges, the burden on individual countries will be reduced. He emphasized that attention should be directed not to individual regions or countries, but to those with vital needs. He also highlighted the importance of consensus and greater flexibility, taking into account that a reform process has been launched within the framework of the UN80 Initiative and that this process is also being carried out at FAO.

Subsequently, the floor was given to Director-General Qu Dongyu, who spoke about the necessity of maximizing technical competencies and expertise in the Organization’s core areas of work and of utilizing transformative partnerships in order to fully leverage existing resources, experience, and innovative potential. He noted that strengthening Country Offices in 2026-2027 to ensure a professional, modern, efficient, and effective global network would further enhance FAO’s global outreach as a “One FAO” organization, thereby reinforcing support to countries at the local level.

The session continued its work with a discussion of a number of issues on the agenda, and the Azerbaijani representative made speeches on the relevant items.
