The 176th session of FAO was held in Rome
From December 2 to 5, 2024, 176th Session of FAO Council was held at the headquarters of Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations. Azerbaijan was represented by the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Italy at the event.
In his opening speech, Independent Chairperson Dr. Hans Hoogeeven emphasized the significance of strengthening endeavors and priority attempts in order to achieve a tangible result on the ground through the involvement of states, companies, financial institutions, farmers, and individual citizens. He also noted the impact of climate change on daily life and miserable consequences of COP28. He mentioned that it is impossible to combat climate change without the ensurance of global food security while food security can not be achieved in the absence of fight against climate change.
Afterwards, Director-General Qu Dongyu took the floor, reminding that next year marks FAO’s 80th anniversary and emphasizing the need to strength “Four Betters” approach that includes better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life for common welfare without leaving anyone behind.
Director-General underscored that world community gathered in September 2024, New York for the “Summit of the Future” in September 2024 where the “Pact for Future” was adopted so as to improve the collective endeavors with a strong commitment to a better world and future. He highlighted the presentation of a road map in an attempt to move from vision to reality, indicating the significance of collective efforts to establish a new FAO with a modernized approach, structure and initiatives in line with modern realities, and to enhance the organization’s capacity to serve its members. Noting that these ideas were advocated by 168 ministers.
He noted that he had completed 121 flights in 11 months of 2024 and proposed an initiative for the revision of FAO’s Main Texts.
Afterwards, the agenda of the session was confirmed, discussions on the articles launched, and appropriate project outcomes were adopted.
With respect to several agenda matters, our country, serving an observer, conveyed observations to the Council concerning matters according to the FAO mandate, and talkings were conducted about the “Baku Harmony Farmers and Climate Initiative” accepted within the framework of COP29.
