Azerbaijani tea was presented at the Headquarters of FAO
Azerbaijan was represented at the event organized by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on May 21 – International Tea Day.
At this year’s event titled “Tea for a better life”, tea’s contribution to sustainability and well-being was especially noted.
FAO Director General Qu Dongyu stated at the event that tea is not only a drink, but a lifeline for millions of people in the world. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the tea sector currently encounters multiple issues, including price volatility, limited access to financial sources, lack of technology, and risks with regard to climate change. He called for global cooperation to develop the tea sector and unlock its full potential.
In his speech, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to FAO Rashad Aslanov, provided detailed information regarding the development of tea sector in our country, implemented projects, and state support. He spoke about the country’s tea customs and stated that tea table represents a symbol of our people’s hospitality by emphasizing that tea culture is one the essential elements of our cultural heritage. Rashad Aslanov shared his thoughts about tea sector’s history and perspectives in our country by stating the specialization of Azerbaijan’s south provinces in tea sector.
Various types of tea, honey, jam, national sweets, and dried fruits from Azerbaijan presented at the event aroused a great interest for the participants. FAO Director General became acquainted with Azerbaijani’s stand and tasted national delicacies.
Within the framework of the event, the opening of six new sites added to the list of FAO’S Globally Important Agriculture Heritage System was held.
Reminding that a resolution was adopted at UN General Assembly in December of 2019 with regard to the declaration of 21 May as International Tea Day. Along with Azerbaijan, China, Russia, Indonesia, Morocco, Kenya, and Republic of Korea participated in the celebration of this year’s International Tea Day.
