Ambassador Rashad Aslanov visits Malta
At the invitation of the Maltese side to participate in the New Year event organized on January 15, 2026, for the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in the country, Ambassador Rashad Aslanov visited Malta on January 14-16, 2026.
During the visit, Ambassador Aslanov held meetings with the President of the Republic of Malta, H.E. Miriam Spiteri Debona, Prime Minister, Robert Abela, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, Co-Chair of the Azerbaijan-Malta Friendship Group in the Maltese Parliament, Chris Agius, Director General of the Department of Political, External Relations and European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, David Mansfield, Director General of the Department of Global Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Neville Aquilina, and Mayor of Valletta, Olaf McKay.
In the course of the meetings, the new geopolitical realities in our region, opportunities for mutual investments in potential areas between the two countries, strengthening cooperation within the framework of international organizations, visits of high-level officials between the parties and organization of business forums in this framework were discussed.
At the New Year event, the President of Malta, H.E. Miriam Spiteri Debona, made a speech and appreciated the joint efforts aimed at strengthening mutual understanding, building bridges and jointly solving the challenges of our time. She noted the key role of diplomacy in promoting dialogue in international relations and resolving conflicts. In her speech, the President of Malta drew attention to the need to jointly fight against the global problems of climate change and illegal migration.
Throughout the event, the President of Malta separately greeted the ambassadors, congratulated them and wished them success in their activities. Ambassador Aslanov congratulated President Debona on behalf of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Ilham Aliyev, and conveyed to him the best wishes of our Head of State. The President expressed her gratitude and asked to convey her congratulations and most sincere wishes to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the people of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the New Year.
On January 15, 2026, a New Year event was also held at the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta, and Ambassador Aslanov exchanged brief congratulations with Robert Abela. During the congratulations, the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, highly appreciated the role of Azerbaijan in the energy supply of Europe, especially Malta, and asked to personally convey his gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev. On the same day, a banquet was also organized for the diplomatic corps at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism.
